Grimes Post
I Love Grimes. (Ok, IDK her personally but I admire her story, music, and art a lot and it changed my life) Haii, Red here. I thought I'd write a little post about my greatest inspiration, Grimes, just for funsies. Sort of like a "shrine", which I guess was a thing on personal blogs at some point. A little preface; sometimes I want to be famous or at least popular. Fame for the most part seems very scary and daunting, but imagine having that many people look up to you and admire the things you worked so hard on. As someone who hardly feels like a real artist, something I desire is for people to look at my work and feel inspired and or to just Like it. For some reason I feel like having my artwork respected is what will make me "legit". I also know that outside approval is probably meaningless and will not make my art better. But I guess it's something us artists secretly desire. And who knows-maybe one day I will be admired by the masses and have a shrine post written about ME! (LMAO) I do think the first step to that is taking yourself seriously though. So I take it back, I Am a Real Artist. Anyways...
GRIMES!
Ok. I'll admit it. Grimes is probably my greatest inspiration ever. And for some reason I'm slightly embarrassed of that because she is totally obsessed with AI and is always talking about it nowadays and I'm not really a fan of stuff like AI art at all. She also has some hot ass takes on social media. But I still respect her so much. First of all, her art changed my life!!! I don't just mean her music. She makes visual art as well (or at least she did). She made these super intricate black and white illustrations, one of which is featured on the cover of Visions. This work has greatly influenced my own style and approach. I started sort of mimicking her art in 2020, when I started listening to her. I fell in love with ink, maximalist compositions, graphic rendering, and fantasy subjects. I have no idea where her original artwork is, but I would love to see it in person one day.
Obviously, Grimes is most known for being a musician/producer. Her music, especially her older records, influence me so much. The ethereal sound and lofi production makes me feel like I am magical and creative, but also comfortable. I suppose it's hard to put the feeling into words.
Lastly, Grimes' story fascinates me so much. If you read her wiki page, you'd see that she started making music fairly "late" during university (at least compared to most musicians who seem to start when they are kids). She taught herself basically everything and just started making shit and putting it out there. She is super unique and was making weird music, but there were people that loved it regardless. She also left university to do music. I find this inspiring because I honestly do not have a big desire to work at a company and lead a traditional life. I feel so much pressure to though. But with stories like Grimes, I know it is possible to just follow your passions despite what others think is right or not. I'm not a musician, but I honestly want to try it now lol.
In conclusion, I want to be Grimes. In some ways. I want to be able to be myself and be respected for it instead of feeling weird! I want to follow my passions unashamed or burdened by expectations of others. And admittedly, I want an audience! In older videos I've seen of her, she is always talking about friends she has that helped with her music, or she did weird fun stuff with (like the house boat incident), and I want that too. I honestly do not have friends with that kind of creative energy, which kind of contributes to me feeling weird most of the time. So I really desire a community like she seemed to have at the start of her career.Grimes Albums Ranking
Most of this post was my own admiration of Grimes, but here's a little bonus ranking of her albums from me, 1 being the best!!
- Visions, 2012 - As much as I would love to be hipster and say Grimes' least popular album is the best, I feel like Visions is objectively the one... probably because Genesis is on it. And Oblivion. And Be a Body. It's just iconic even to non Grimes stans.
- Halfaxa, 2010 - I have the cd for this and it's my most played. It's so beautiful, and has that handmade quality that I really really love.
- Miss Anthropocene, 2020 - Controversial! Tbh, this album is a little inconsistent. I don't think it's Grimes' best at all. But TO ME! It influenced me a lot. I think its concept is really good, and its dark energy is empowering. Also My Name is Dark is possibly my favorite Grimes song in general, so yeah.
- Art Angels, 2015 - I love this one but the only thing is it doesn't have the Grimes ethereal-ness that I love. Realiti sort of does! I still think it's amazing though. World Princess part II is another all time fav.
- Geidi Primes, 2010 - I love this one, but I must admit, it's probably the least accessible Grimes album. It's really just ambient lofi. I feel like Halfaxa is just Geidi Primes but refined. Which makes sense because they were released the same year. So, if any Grimes fans read this, let me know which album is your fav! Or what you think of Grimes in general. Cheers!
